Routine dental cleanings and exams twice per year are the cornerstone of maintaining optimum dental health.
The dental examination includes checking the teeth for decay, fractures and broken fillings. The dentist also will check the gums for periodontal disease and recession. Screening all oral tissues, especially the tongue, the roof of the mouth and the cheek for oral cancer also is important. Intraoral pictures often are taken to help locate dental problems and to educate the patient on their dental needs.
Dental cleanings with our Spartanburg dental hygienists begin with the use of special instruments to remove tartar and plaque from tooth surfaces above and below the gumline. Next, the teeth are polished and the hygienist flosses between the teeth.
